My reasoning why Chris(and Mel) doesn’t have as many powers as Wyatt
Charmed, as a show, was about the balance wasn’t it? The balance of good and evil, the balance of power, the balance of magical lives versus normal lives, the balance between self and siblings etc.
So fast forward, you have Wyatt Halliwell. The one every side of this balance is afraid of. The Once and Future King. The one who caused all magic to stop when he was born. Demons, neutral beings, good beings, everyone without power. Now, some could argue this was out of respect for the first ‘charmed child’ to be born, but others argue because all different aspects of the balance were going to Wyatt, manifesting as powers.
Think about it.
Whiteligher (angel) powers such as orbing, healing etc which are aligned with ‘Good’
Basic powers such as spell casting, potion making etc, which are neutral wiccan powers
Projection, neutral power but is usually aligned with evil.
And with projection, he has powers that are aligned with evil like pyrokinesis, power negation etc
And then you have mother fucking Excalibur (which I will cover don’t you worry)
So, you have all this power in one being. Sounds a little off balance, right? Well obviously, it is.
But that is where the second, and third eldest of the Charmed Children come in. Now, I’m not going to talk about Melinda much, because she’s what, five years old in comics? If that? Her powers are barely manifesting, so I can’t tell what role she has yet.
But I can tell you about Chris. Now I firmly believe Chris was made/born to offset, and balance Wyatt. Sure, he shares the same angel blood as Wyatt, the same wiccan base powers, but have you noticed something? Chris doesn’t have the extreme, flashy fire power Wyatt does.
No, what Chris does have over Wyatt though, is extreme, completely and utterly strong control. He is able to channel his telekinesis through his hands, like his late aunt. So that means he can channel it through his eyes too. But do you ever see him doing it? Never. Not even when his father had a sword to his throat.
He was staring directly at Leo, and didn’t even flinch. He has a strong enough sense of control to not only try and protect himself, but also to keep his head and think that ‘if I do this, it will blow my cover’.
That’s not even going into the whole ‘I kept my identity a secret for a year, lying to the women I adore and look up too’ situation.
Another good example of his control is crushing ability!
Do you know how much control that would take? He would have to be able to visualize what he is crushing, in the gif above, he would have to visualize the muscles, bones, and vocal cords in the neck to be able to crush them. Not only that, but he has to go against his morals-killing an innocent.
And he doesn’t lose his cool. In fact, if his mouth didn’t drop open, and the camera didn’t pan up to his eyes, I would have thought he was as cold as his overlord brother.
At this point, I wouldn’t even be surprised if Chris was the one who taught Wyatt how to use telekinesis to crush things.
But I’m going off point here.
It’s this control that Chris demonstrates that would keep his brother, the powerhouse in line. He is the one who grounds Wyatt. The only reason (baring Gideon’s influence) that Wyatt went evil in the other future was because Chris was too devastated by the loss of his mother to keep in control, to keep his brother in line. Chris is the yin to Wyatt’s yang.
It’s my belief that Chris could, in fact, wield Excalibur without much of an issue on a temporary basis. Much like Merlin could in the legends. Because Merlin was made to teach, and balance Arthur. But the power of Excalibur doesn’t belong to Chris. It belongs to Wyatt. So, I think he could handle it for a bit, but then have to hand it over to Wyatt.
But Chris has flaws too. He is too stubborn. Too blinded by the good versus evil dynamic. He can’t see both sides.
That is where, I think Melinda will come in. She’ll be the middle ground to her brother’s extremes.
