That Old Black Magic
Two treasure hunters entered an abandoned mine in Muir Woods, in San Francisco. They found a skeleton inside and a number of symbols on a wall. One hunter was worried, but the other started digging. A cloud of mist emerged from a crack and the wall shattered. Behind it was an ornately dressed woman with a snake draped over her neck. She demanded her wand, but the treasure hunters didn't have it. She shrank them with a magic powder and fed them to her snake. She then commanded the snake to find her wand.
A local TV station was showing a program about antiques at Buckland Auction House; Phoebe was on the phone with Prue, watching Piper and Dan kissing. Phoebe was concerned that Piper was moving too fast in order to get over Leo, but Prue didn't think there was a problem. Prue found a small scepter with an amber stone at the head. Leo orbed into the Halliwell Manor and urgently spoke to Phoebe as Piper and Dan entered, still a little too close for Leo's comfort.
Leo told Piper and Phoebe that a powerful 18th-century witch, Tuatha, had just escaped. Tuatha was a good witch who turned evil and started killing innocents before being trapped in the cave in 1799. He also told her that the Charmed Ones couldn't go after her because she kills good witches. Only the "Chosen One"--a mortal--can defeat her, using her own wand. He needs the Charmed Ones to protect him from Tuatha until they could acquire the wand.
Prue told the owner of the wand that it was an 18th century piece. The owner originally bought it for only $15 at a flea market, but Prue told her she could get $5000 for it at auction. Jack Sheridan, an Internet auctioneer, offered $1000 immediately for the wand. Jack addressed the woman as Betty, and she offered him her address. He said he just wanted to be on the same stage as Prue, because it would give his startup credibility. As he walked away, Prue crooked her finger and remotely picked the address out of his pocket.
Piper, Phoebe and Leo find the Chosen One -- Kyle Gwydion, a put-upon teenager who enjoys stage magic. Leo told them that a Chosen One is the seventh son of a seventh son. The two sisters approached Kyle and demonstrated their own form of magic: Piper froze him and then Phoebe stepped behind him.
The snake entered Betty's living room, frightening her. Tuatha followed, and drew the wand into her hand. Tuatha killed Betty, but Prue broke the door and flinged her back. Tuatha dropped the wand and Prue ran off with it.
Kyle was at the manor with Phoebe, Piper and Leo. He thought he was the butt of a joke. Prue walked in past him and the jewel glowed for a moment. Kyle took the wand and the jewel glowed again.
Jenny walked in and ran into Kyle, holding the wand. Kyle balanced the wand on a finger and it began to spin. He had no idea how he was doing this. Leo walked in and wanted to know what Kyle was doing.
Tuatha, in the mine, found her spell book. She opened to the spell "To Disempower a Witch", which required a fresh human heart.
The sisters consulted the Book of Shadows and found a scrying spell.
A film student was lost in the wilderness. Tuatha reached out and ripped out his heart.
Phoebe scried, and located Tuatha. Kyle couldn't make the wand spin again, in spite of Leo's encouragement. The sisters set out to meet Tuatha, though Leo urged them not to. They opened the door and found Jack Sheridan. He wanted "my wand back." Dan walked up and was irritated to find Leo still here. The sisters finally excused themselves and slipped out the back door.
Phoebe found the mine shaft. Prue went in alone, since Tuatha knew only about her. She found the film student's heart. Prue found her powers gone, but Piper and Phoebe came to her rescue.
Leo continued to train Kyle. He did't get very far. Kyle handed over the wand and walked away. Leo scolded Kyle, and Kyle became angry. Leo handed the wand back, and Kyle pointed it and flinged Leo through a glass door. Leo orbed back in. The sisters returned and told Leo that Prue's powers are gone. Kyle tossed the wand onto a sofa and walked away.
Two film students called for the one already killed. Tuatha appeared, and took their hearts. She cast the spell on Phoebe and Piper. She then sends the snake after the wand.
Dan and Jenny found Kyle walking down the street. She gave him a word of encouragement, and he turned around and went back to the manor. The snake appeared at the manor. Leo spotted the snake. Prue stabbed the snake with a fire poker, but it just split in two. Piper couldn't freeze them. Kyle heard the commotion and ran in. Leo tossed him the wand and he yelled "Die!", destroying the snakes.
Phoebe has prepared three potions; she had meant one to give Kyle courage, but no such potion exists. One "potion" was just plain water. The sisters, Leo, and Kyle prepared to confront Tuatha. She appeared, and Phoebe threw a sleeping potion. It had no effect, and Tuatha threw one of her own, knocking Phoebe and Leo out. Another potion encased Prue and Piper's feet in stone. Tuatha drew the wand to her. Prue threw the "courage potion". Kyle and Tuatha fought for the wand via telekinesis; in time, Kyle got the wand and wished Tuatha gone. Tuatha warped and exploded. Prue and Piper were free, and Leo and Phoebe came to.
Leo realized that he couldn't give Piper a normal relationship, and agreed that she should be with Dan.
The jewel on the wand was broken. Prue admitted that there was no courage potion.
At P3, Prue decided to hand the wand to Jack Sheridan. He noted the broken crystal, and bought her a drink. Piper met with Dan and told him that she has broken up with Leo
